ELDER DOLPHUS CUE

WILLIAM COWPER (1731-1800), the English poet, penned these words that were first published (1779) by John Newton in the Olney Hymns:

 God moves in a mysterious way

 His wonders to perform;

 He plants his footsteps in the sea,

 And rides upon the storm.

People have been introduced to the restored gospel of Jesus Christ in many different and sometimes mysterious ways, and the true story of how Dolphus Cue was converted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is quite unusual and interesting. A few years ago while wandering around the Pacific Northwest looking for employment, he found a temporary job house-painting in Oregon. The home owner obviously liked the quality of his work because when he finished, she asked if he would like to go paint a house that she owned in Mexico. Part of the contract was her offer to let him live in the house for several months with the utilities paid. When he agreed, she drove him to Mexico and then left him there.

One Sunday morning Dolphus needed some paper for his computer printer; and since he didn't have an automobile, he set out walking to a store that was a few miles away from the house. Enroute, he saw what appeared to be a church located on top of a nearby hill. He couldn't help but notice the many steps that had to be climbed in order to reach the building. As he stood at the edge of the road gazing at those steps, he saw two young women standing outside the front door looking at him. They quickly descended the steps and introduced themselves as full time missionaries and invited him to come to Church.

He declined the invitation that morning; but because he wanted to see the inside of the building, he promised to attend Church the following week. Dolphus Cue is a man of his word; and when he makes a commitment, he always follows through without exception. When he came back to the Church the next Sunday, the sister missionaries were waiting for him. It wasn't long before he was taught the missionary discussions and committed to baptism. After just a few months, Brother Cue left Mexico and continued his wandering journey eastward ending up in Baltimore, Maryland where he now resides with two of his sisters and a nephew.

For unknown reasons, he had not been taught the new member discussions or advanced to receive the Melchizedek priesthood prior to our arrival in the Chesapeake Ward in September of 2011; but we have had the privilege of working with him for many months. Dolphus Cue was ordained an elder earlier this year, and we then taught him the temple preparation classes as well. On May 26, 2012, we accompanied Brother Cue to The House of The Lord in Kensington, Maryland where he received his temple endowment. Five other members of the Church joined us at the temple on this very special day.

Dolphus is a wonderful member of the Church who is humble and sincere in his desire to live gospel standards. He is kind and soft-spoken, and we have never heard him speak ill of another person.
